New Roads Ahead
As the 2007 cycling season progresses, Columbus cyclists will see a new team on the scene, Phoenix Racing. Although we’re small, we intend to make a difference in the area. We’re looking for men and women who are competitive and have thought about racing, but who have no idea where to begin. You may think you’re alone, but you aren’t. We all started there, unsure of how we could test ourselves in a race, wondering if we would break the rules we didn’t even know. It can be intimidating, trying to figure out how to register for a race, or wondering what this “race license” is that you’re supposed to present. Bicycle racing is a team sport, and the new, independent racer can easily be overwhelmed by the strategies other teams are using. It’s frustrating, not understanding the racing action but being squarely in the middle of it.
At the risk of sounding like a law firm’s advertisement, we’ll still say this: Don’t worry, we can help! Find us now, in the pre-season, and start talking with us. Most racers are already deep in the training plans they hope will result in them standing on the podium. However, it is never too late to start training: The racing season lasts through October, and even longer if you get bitten by the cyclocross bug.
Even in the winter, members of our team will be leading rides, willing to share our knowledge. By March, we’ll once more be racing. Those interested in more information about racing and the team can contact Shari at PhoenixRacing@Columbus.rr.com.
We’re proud to announce that longtime sponsors Stock Consulting and the Westerville Bike Shop will stay on board as Phoenix Racing rises from what was Savage Hill. You’ll surely still see many of the Savage Hill jerseys on the road, but you may be surprised by how young some of those riders are. Members of Phoenix Racing, and many members of Savage Hill who are now on other teams, have donated a significant amount of gear to the junior development program, which is now being run by COBC.
Even though our team will no longer have junior members, we’re still interested in youth development. Phoenix Racing, in conjunction with the Westerville Bike Shop, and assisted by Team Godspeed, will host a Juniors Cycling Camp, running June 13 through June 16, 2007, and culminating with the Garrett Wonders Memorial Criterium. Elite USCF Coach Steve Thordarson will again be the head coach. Expect to see camp materials on this website soon.
Through the coming weeks, the old Savage Hill Cycling website will gradually change to reflect the new team and eventually move to a new URL. We hope you’ll visit both sites periodically and see what we’re up to. Wishing everyone in Central Ohio a fantastic cycling and racing season, we are proud to be Phoenix Racing.
